Introduction

Have you thought about the easiest way for you to learn? Do you remember new concepts better if you read the material or see it on a chart or diagram? You may be a visual learner. Do you recall information you heard more quickly than what you read? You may be an auditory learner. Or, maybe touching or "doing' the work helps you to learn more easily. If so, you may be a tactile/kinesthetic learner.

Why does it matter? Once you know the strengths (and weaknesses) of your learning style, you can concentrate on using the appropriate skills and methods to learn more efficiently and effectively.

So how does a person's learning style impact teamwork? Overall, diversity in learning styles among team members can be a positive impact on effective team/collaborative activities. It provides a balance when learners work together, especially when assignment/project information is provided in varying formats. As an example, the visual and auditory learners may extract different information from the same video clip. This positive impact also occurs when the team assignment requires varying deliverables. One student may do well at the writing, another in the developing a visual presentation, and still another in the statistical compilations or demonstrations. Understanding your learning style and the learning styles of your team members can help you work together more easily.
