The Dining Room is a mosaic of interrelated scenes - some funny, some touching, some rueful - which together, create an in-depth portrait of the vanishing lifestyle of the upper-middle class WASP. The play also displays the end of the formal dining room; the place where the family met daily for meals, talked and engaged one another with the problems and the conflicts of the day, into a society where the family that eats together regularly is the oddity instead of the norm. The action of The Dining Room dovetails and coalesces ultimately into a theatrical piece of exceptional range, compassionate humor, and abundant humanity.
