Social Science
On behalf of the Social Science department, we would like to welcome you to another exciting year at Mesa Community College. This web site is designed to give you an overview of the programs and courses offered within our department and to keep you updated on noteworthy news.
Economics Most contemporary definitions of economics involve the notions of choice and scarcity. Perhaps the earliest of these is by Lionell Robbins in 1935: "Economics is a science which studies human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses." Virtually all textbooks have definitions that are derived from this definition. Though the exact wording differs from author to author, the standard definition is something like this: "Economics is the social science which examines how people choose to use limited or scarce resources in attempting to satisfy their unlimited wants."
Future StudiesChange is happening at an ever faster rate today--driven partly by technological changes leading to changes in all other areas of our lives, and by the increasing interdependence between countries and peoples today, as well as the decentralization of societies and institutions within countries (also furthered by information technologies today). The evolution of political and economic borders, systems, and alignments, forces societies to become part of a global economy and society, while still maintaining national, ethnic, and cultural identities and meaning impacts. When people better understand change, they also often see more opportunities for their lives and ways to better positively influence the future that is being created.
History History is the study of the past, particularly the written record of the human race, but more generally including scientific and archaeological discoveries about the past. Recently, there has been an increased interest in oral history, passed down from generation to generation. New technology, such as photography, sound recording, and motion pictures, now complement the written word in the historical record.

Political Science Political science is a branch of social science that deals with the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behavior. Political Science is often described as the study of who gets what, where, when and why. Discovering a proper balance between the individual, the society and its Government for civilization and human progress is paramount.
