On behalf of Reading, we would like to welcome you to another exciting year at Mesa Community College. This web site is designed to give you an overview of the programs and courses offered within our department and to keep you updated on noteworthy news.
Critial Reading focuses on applying critical inquiry skills to varied and challenging reading materials are required for success in business, industry, and technology. Includes analysis, synthesis, and evaluation through written discourse. Continued study in this area includes evaluatation of the writings of 20th century authors from a variety of countries and cultures in order to gain a more global perspective of both universal and contemporary issues. Relationships among these writings and their cultural perspectives will be examined.
ESL The MCC Reading department, in addition to its regular courses, also offers classes for students whose primary language is other than English. After taking the language placement test (CELSA), students are advised about appropriate classes and program options. MCC's regular ESL program offers a variety of semester long (16-week) ESL classes at five different language levels for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students as well as an Intensive English program (8-week sessions) which meets five days a week.
The Reading Department curriculum is designed to develop the necessary reading skills to succeed at Mesa Community College. The Reading Department offers a variety of Reading courses to aid students in reaching this goal. Some of the Reading courses may require tutoring or special study hours in the Learning Enhancement Center [LEC] in addition to class coursework.
