Welcome to the Exercise Science Department at Mesa Community College.  This Department offeres a variety of certificate, degree programs and courses in the fields of Exercise Science, Physical Education, Health Sciences, Recreation, Wellness and Dance. The Exercise Science Department offers to students, faculty, staff and community members a wide range of lecture courses, and physical activity classes courses accessible on-line, face to face and as hybrid/blended classes in 16 week, 14 week and 8 week formats.  Please join the Exercise Science faculty and staff in broadening your exposure and interaction to a diverse offering of classes in a positive and engaging teaching and learning environment. 

 

Dance Dance (DAN prefix)


The Dance program at Mesa Community College welcomes you. We offer a variety of fun, exciting and challenging classes to suit every level of dancer. From beginner to professional. We have the class, instructor and the ability to bring out the best dancer in you!



Dance HumanitiesDance Humanities (DAH prefix)

Dance Humanities focuses on origins, historical development, and cultural characteristics of the various styles of dance. We continue with exploration, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of the role of dance in various cultures around the world. In depth analysis of ballet and modern dance from the early roots in European court dance to contemporary dance as well as investigating the role dance plays in shaping American popular culture from the late 19th to the early 21st centuries. Explores social and cultural issues of power, class, gender, age and sexual orientation.

Dance Exercise Science (EXS prefix)

The Exercise Science program at Mesa Community College offers students Certificate and Degree options in the following areas: Exercise and Wellness, Kinesiology, Coaching, Personal Training and/or Sports Performance, Physical Education, Athletic Training, Strength, Nutrition and Personal Training with a variety of career pathways to choose from. Health ScienceHealth Sciences (HES prefix)

Health Sciences courses at Mesa Community College provide greater knowledge and insights into health behaviors that create an optimal lifestyle and techniques that may work for you to change or modify health behaviors. Courses explore topics such as stress management, substance abuse behavior changes, nutrition, exercise and fitness, women’s health issues, First aid and CPR, and athletic injuries, to mention a few.



Lifetime FitnessLifetime Fitness (PED Prefix)

The Lifetime Fitness and Weight Training courses at Mesa Community College are two and one credit hour fitness education classes providing students flexible access to three fitness facilities at MCC Southern and Dobson and two facilities at MCC Red Mountain. All Lifetime Fitness Center staff are faculty with an educational background in exercise and fitness, are certified as Strength and Conditioning Specialists or Certified Personal Training professionals through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), with years of experience working in the fitness industry.

Physical EducationPhysical Education (PED prefix)

Mesa Community College’s physical education program offers a variety of group fitness, leisure dance, outdoor recreational activites as well as leisure sport activities, leisure/outdoor sport activities, martial arts, Fitness Centers and sports performance enhancement classes at both Southern and Dobson and Red Mountain. All of these classes   focus on promoting, developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle by incorporating physical activity and movement into our daily lives, no matter what our age. All classes are offered in the following format:  Beginning level activity is designated by a 101 number, Intermediate level by 102, and Advanced level by 201, followed by the idntifying module code.  For example beginning level  body sculpt would be designated as PED 101BS, an intermediate Hip Hop class would be designated at PED 102HH.

RecreationRecreation (REC prefix)

Recreation courses at Mesa Community College are offered to prepare students for successful employment in the Recreation industry. The curriculum at Mesa Community College also prepares student to successfully transfer to ASU (downtown) Recreation program or to other Recreation Programs at other 4 year institutions.
Wellness Wellness Education (WED prefix)

Wellness Education courses at Mesa Community College are offered to increase your personal knowledge of how to live a healthier, happier and more productive life, by learning to nurture and balance all the dimensions of health and wellness. Wellness classes also focus extensively on examining Complimentary or Alternative Medicine practices in a variety of therapeutic modalities, attempting to understand the philosophy and medicinal value of many of these approaches to care and teaching all students skills on how to become wiser consumer of health care services and the ability to identity quality non-traditional approaches to health care from those that are wasteful and potentially dangerous.
