Welcome to MCC's English Department. Our diverse faculty offer a variety of courses designed to meet university transfer requirements and appeal to the wide interests of our students. In addition to first-year composition, we offer courses in many literatures, the humanities, creative writing, academic writing, personal writing, film studies, women's studies, journalism, and English as a Second Language. In both our traditional and online classes, MCC's English faculty are committed to providing excellent instruction to help students improve their real-world literacy skills and their understanding of and appreciation for the way humans use language and art to communicate through various media and genres. Film MCC offers a wide range of Film and CInema classes. Film usually refers to the study of film as an art form or social commentary. Cinema usually refers to the study of filmmaking. We offer Film classes in the English Department - these course have either a HUM (humanities) designation or ENH (english humanities) designation. The Cinema classes are offered in the Theatre which is a part of the Speech Communication department. Those classes have a THE (theatre) designation.
Composition The Composition Program helps students learn to write effectively in academic, professional, civic and personal contexts. In addition to the required first-year composition courses (ENG 101 and ENG 102), MCC offers courses in developmental writing, technical writing, academic writing, and personal exploratory writing.
Creative Writing Creative Writing courses are offered with both the ENG and CRW prefixes. We offer introductory courses along with more specialized workshops in poetry, fiction, and screenwriting.
ESL - English as a Second LanguageMCC's ESL program offers four levels of courses in English grammar, listening and speaking, and writing with oral practice. After taking the language placement test (CELSA), students are advised about appropriate classes and program options.
English HumanitiesIn MCC's Humanities courses, students explore humanity's artistic and intellectual achievements within their historical, aesthetic, and philosophical contexts.
JournalismJournalism students choose from a variety of courses related to news writing, feature writing, and public relations, and many work on the staff of the Mesa Legend, MCC's award-winning newspaper.
Narrative StudiesStudents learn to examine narrative texts in literature, film, and other media within their cultural contexts.
Women's StudiesWomen's Studies, an intensive interdisciplinary liberal arts program, provides students with the tools and opportunities to discuss and critique the historical and contemporary theories and practices of feminism(s). Students take a variety of courses focusing on women's experiences and perspectives, exploring topics such as history, culture, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender in order to help bring about equality, understanding, and peace.
