BIO 245/6  Cellular and Molecular Biology

Recent decades have seen tremendous progress in our understanding of cellular and molecular biology, with molecular genetics in particular having a significant impact on our lives. Surprisingly, the explosion in information has actually simplified the field, and areas previously considered disparate now be seen as part of a relatively simple pattern.  This introductory to modern cell biology addresses these issues, providing a concise, comprehensive look at the present knowledge in the field.

Cellular and Molecular Biology Laboratory

Development of precision in laboratory skill and accuracy in data analysis are essential components of training in any of the life sciences. Cellular and Molecular Biology is a laboratory based science.  The laboratory portion of the course (co-requisite for Bio245) will provide students with opportunities to develop these essential skills while conducting classical, and modern, laboratory experiments.  The students will conduct experiments using proven methods for cloning DNA, purifying and characterizing macromolecules from both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, spectrophotometric analyses, sub-cellular fractionation, and microscopy.

This course will be offered Fall and Spring of each year.
